Junior Turf Pre-season and selections

Welcome to the SWU Junior Turf pre-season and Selections for 2019 J1, J2, J3 and U13 Turf Teams
We will be kicking off the season with our famous "Day on the Turf" day for all Junior Turf players, Grass players who want to have a try of turf and for returning players that would like a fun skills session to get back in to hockey. At the end of the session, we host a sausage sizzle with Zooper DOOPERS. Registration for DAY on the Turf is a separate registration but is free for all attending.

During pre-season we have 2 sessions per week that include skills sessions and selections. These dates will be outlined below. During these sessions, we have guest coaches providing stick work skill sessions, game sessions and during all this, we have our selectors helping us choose the best team fit and the best fit for your daughter so that we have our best season ever.

In addition, this year, we are taking advantage of the ever popular PARK RUN. Every Saturday, a free event is hosted by many suburbs across Brisbane on a Saturday morning. It is a friendly 5 km run/ walk that the whole family can participate in. We will be meeting at a couple of locations over the pre-season. It is completely optional but encouraged, as it will help improve fitness and endurance for the season ahead. You can register with Park Run on www.parkrun.com.au and that way your time will be registered. If you choose to just do the run but not register - that's fine too.

Wolves Tournament for u18's players. We are excited to announce that we have been invited to participate in the Inaugural Wolves CUP which will be held at Burringbar Park on Saturday 9th February. It is in a slightly different format - 9 a side but a great opportunity to play in a tournament early in the season. This competition will also be a part of our final selections for our Junior turf competition.

This year as well, SWU will have 5 teams in the WOMEN's competition. DIV 1, 2, 3, 4 and 5. We now have direct pathway for our juniors to play in the top division in senior hockey. All our women's and men's teams will all train on the same nights at SHC with our DIV 1 and 2 squad training twice a week (including fitness sessions).

All our training for all teams will be at the State Hockey Centre, Lytton Rd, Morningside (Colmslie).

2018 Coaching Announcement

SWU are very excited to announce the appointment of Phil Jackwitz as not only our 2018 Division 2 Women’s coach but also as SWU Coach/Player Development Specialist. This is a very hands on role, where Phil will be running coaching clinics and junior player clinics (both grass and turf), exclusively for SWU members throughout the year with a major focus on junior athlete and coach development. He will also be rotating amongst our junior and senior turf and grass trainings to help our coaches so please make Phil feel welcome when you see him.

Like so many others in our hockey community, Phil Jackwitz is a hockey tragic having played, umpired, and coached our great game.  It was in 2012 though that Phil decided to shift his Hockey passion from being a hobby to being a profession, and he hasn’t looked back.  Phil has since enjoyed stints at both the BHA; 2012 – 2015 and at Hockey NSW; 2015 - 2017.  Phil boasts an Advanced Level Coaching Accreditation and a modest list of coaching successes at both the local and state level.  In 2018, Phil joins the coaching ranks of South West United Hockey Club; dedicated to helping the club reach its goals.

Division 3 will be coached by Brad Rogers.

Division 4 will be coached by Amy Gilmore

Division 5 will be coached by Sandy Bush

We are also looking to field a Division 6 women’s team this season.  If you would be interested in playing in this team, please let us know as soon as possible.

We will also be fielding as many Junior Turf and Grass teams as possible, again, depending on numbers.  We have many very excited coaches (Brad Rogers, Angela Lindop, Ros Kirwin, Liam Crowhurst, Riaan Retief, Georgia Challinor, Jaime Ladbrook, Gillian Henschke) ready to start the season on the 21st January.  More updates will follow in early January.

In the meantime, we would like to wish you a very Merry Christmas and a fun filled 2018.

From the hardworking committee at South West United Hockey Club.
