Welcome to South West United Hockey Club

South West United Hockey Club is currently the largest hockey club in the western suburbs of Brisbane. We cater to all standards of hockey players aged 5 to 75 in both grass and turf competitions. Our club was founded in the early 1970's and is based in the Graceville area of Brisbane however attracts and welcomes players from all over Brisbane.

This club is truly a volunteer run organisation, with the local community gaining immensely from the hours of dedicated service by its volunteer administrators, coaches, managers and umpires. We currently have a membership of over 300 players that compete in Masters, Senior Turf, Senior Grass, Junior Turf, Junior Grass and U9 and U7 Rookey competitions.

We pride ourselves on being a very welcoming and safe club and you will notice us for sure in our distinctive bright blue and orange uniforms and we're affectionately known as the Mighty Swooos.

If you are interested in playing hockey at any level, please contact us to find out more on season trial dates and times.

Head of Development

2019 has been a positive year for South West United Hockey Club.  We have certainly taken some nice sized steps forward in some key areas.  We as a club want to keep our rate of improvement at a high level.  Reflecting our progressive approach to club hockey, and with 2020 front of mind, the club has decided to formally title Phil Jackwitz's role as SWUHC’s Head of Development.

The Head of Development is a dual-purpose role; “recruitment” and “development”.  The Head of Development will work across a number of areas including working with schools, creating recruitment events, creating development opportunities for members across the whole year, plus providing ongoing support for all our coaches.

This role will very hands-on so if you have any ideas on how to further advance our great club, please get in touch with Phil.  You can reach Phil at philjhockey@gmail.com.

Pre-Christmas Hockey

Attention those wanting to play Divisions 1, 2, and 3 in 2020

We’ve booked turf at the State Hockey Centre for some pre-Christmas hockey fun. These are open to anyone interested in playing Saturday turf in 2020, both men and women. They’ll be low key sessions, mostly game based with a few drills to hit off and warm up with. These sessions are perfect for anyone interested in linking up with the South West United HC Division 1 and 2 women’s teams for 2020, but again, not limited to. It has been discussed that after one of the sessions we might head down to the riverbank and have a BBQ. We might even try to set up a game of soap hockey. I’ll confirm these ideas at a later date.

Session details are;

Venue: State Hockey Centre

Days: Sundays

Dates: November 24th, December 8th, and 22nd

Time: 5:30pm – 6:30pm

Any questions? Get in touch with Phil philjhockey@gmail.com or 0432 031 665.

SWUHC and your School

Off the back of some positive achievements in 2019, SWUHC is poised to enter into a new phase of growth.  Connecting with schools has always been identified as a sizable part of any vision to build a club.  SWUHC has now created a number of activities designed to build the quantity and quality of our connections with local schools as well as the broader community.  Ultimately, we’d love to give as many local students as possible, the opportunity to pick up a hockey stick and play our game.

Starting from Term 1 2020, SWUHC will be offering to work with local schools across a number of ideas.  The ideas being developed will appeal to all junior age groups.  These ideas include;
  • Delivering introductory hockey programs, during or after school hours, outdoors and / or indoors
  • Assisting schools engaged in inter-school hockey competitions with coaching across their pre-competition preparations and / or competitions
  • As we did with Oxley State School earlier this year, set up “Come and Try” spaces at school fetes
  • Create a School Hockey Gala Day

If there’s an idea here that grabs your attention, or if you are positioned where you can assist the club in improving its connections with local schools, or if there are other ideas worthwhile exploring, please get in touch with Phil Jackwitz at philjhockey@gmail.com.  SWUHC would love to connect with as many school communities as possible at either a new or a refreshed level.

2019 Coaching Announcement

SWU are very excited to announce the appointment of Phil Jackwitz as not only our 2019 Division 1 Women’s coach but also as SWU Coach/Player Development Specialist. This is a very hands on role, where Phil will be running coaching clinics and junior player clinics (both grass and turf), exclusively for SWU members throughout the year with a major focus on junior athlete and coach development. He will also be rotating amongst our junior and senior turf and grass trainings to help our coaches so please make Phil feel welcome when you see him.

Like so many others in our hockey community, Phil Jackwitz is a hockey tragic having played, umpired, and coached our great game.  It was in 2012 though that Phil decided to shift his Hockey passion from being a hobby to being a profession, and he hasn’t looked back.  Phil has since enjoyed stints at both the BHA; 2012 – 2015 and at Hockey NSW; 2015 - 2017.  Phil boasts an Advanced Level Coaching Accreditation and a modest list of coaching successes at both the local and state level.  In 2018, Phil joined the coaching ranks of South West United Hockey Club; dedicated to helping the club reach its goals.

Division 2 will be coached by Tim O'Sullivan.

Division 3 will be coached by Amy Gilmore.

Division 4 will be coached by Brad Rogers.

Division 5 will be coached by Sandy Bush

We will also be fielding as many Junior Turf and Grass teams as possible, again, depending on numbers.

From the hardworking committee at South West United Hockey Club.
